August 31, 2016: It’s the end of VLS’s fiscal year, which marks one year since Pro Bono Director Lynn Girton joined VLS through the generosity of Robert K. Kraft. In just one year, Lynn grew the VLS volunteer attorney panel from approximately 35 attorneys to over 130 attorneys! The Boston legal community has joined together to ensure no veteran falls through the cracks due to a civil legal issue.

Friends of VLS is a group of distinguished individuals invited by the VLS Board of Directors to be affiliated with the organization due to their special knowledge of veterans’ issues, legal services, philanthropy, and non-profit organizations. July 21, 2016: VLS was delighted to host David Wiseman, Head of Armed Forces Programmes of The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. His trip was planned with support by the U.S. State Department to learn of innovative approaches to support returning servicemembers.

June 15, 2016: VLS announces the award of a major endowment grant from the Colonel Ruby W. Linn Foundation. The endowment grant is $250,000 and includes a challenge for VLS to raise an additional $250,000 toward the endowment over the next 12 months. If VLS meets this challenge, the Foundation will give another $250,000 toward the endowment, for a total possible endowment of $750,000. Stay tuned for more information about the matching challenge.

May 2016: VLS announces new board member, former Appeals Court Justice and former Massachusetts Gaming Commissioner, Hon. James McHugh, III. Judge McHugh will serve as Chair of VLS’s newly formed Programming Committee.
April 2016: VLS has completed its Salesforce consulting project, funded by the Highland Street Foundation Community Impact Consultants initiative. The new software has improved VLS’s case and volunteer management, in addition to improving tracking of development efforts. The project lead was VLS Office Manager and “Jill of most trades,” Hannah Taylor.

March 2016: Robert K. Kraft’s matching challenge part 1 of 2 has been met! Robert Kraft donated $50,000 to VLS for the year 2015-2016 and challenged VLS to raise matching funds. VLS is delighted to report that it has met this challenge, in advance of the August 2016 deadline! VLS will now receive another $50,000 from Mr. Kraft for 2016-2017 and must again strive to match his generous contribution.

January 2016: Robin Azar joined VLS’s board and will act as Chair of its newly formed Communications Committee. Robin comes to VLS with over thirty years of experience in marketing and events. Robin served as a Vice President of Corporate Communications and Affairs for Fidelity Investments from 2004 until 2015. In her role at Fidelity, Robin was responsible for a $30M budget and team of 20 associates to create marketing opportunities for client retention, loyalty and business development. Robin resides in Wellesley with her fiancé, Ed.
January 2016: VLS announces new board member, Daniel LaPenta, Esq. Dan, a Navy JAG officer, previously served as a VLS Development Committee Member. Dan recently deployed to Cuba, returning in November 2015, just in time for the birth of his second son. Dan’s focus at VLS is to develop and implement a law firm fund drive.
December 2015: VLS co-directors Anna Richardson and Sarah Roxburgh were presented with the Margaret Stewart Lindsay Inspiration Award. The award was presented to a participant of the Social Innovation Forum who overcame adversity and persevered to achieve social impact.

November 2015: Joseph Kearns Goodwin, Esq., Iraq & Afghanistan veteran and founder of National Service Now joins the VLS board. Joe’s efforts will focus on helping VLS raise the necessary resources to expand services to veterans in need.
October 2015: Lily Robles of Opus Design has joined the VLS Board. Lily brings a marketing, communications, and graphic design background to VLS. Her efforts will focus on helping VLS elevate its printed materials to create awareness about VLS and strengthen its brand.
